Go Up Go Down

Hello to all and thank you Christian for the personal invite to come back to this site and poke around.
I haven?t been back because I am amongst the new poor people of the nation. (I?m heavily invested in real-estate)
I?m also a noob at all this. (Kinda like a boob only not as whiney)

We are looking to detect meteorites. (And of course any of the good stuff along the way)

My buddy and I have been driving our ATV?s out and about the deserts of the Bonneville Salt Flats utilizing the absolute latest state-of-the-art technology to find our targets. Magnets on a string and a couple of Harbor Freight detectors. (Actually one of them isn?t even that good!)

So when you combine all our expertise, equipment and the fact that iron meteorites don?t do well in salt and water, (the one thing I can say I actually know) you can see we are riding the ridge of success!

My question to anyone out there is; would we be better off trying to build a P.I. or a magnetometer or both? And is there even a magnetometer set up that would work on the back of an ATV?

My buddy is an electronics wiz! (I?m only smart enough to write the emails and maybe do the soldering)
We have looked at some schematics for some PI?s but the jury is out on which one would work best on the front of an ATV with say a 1 meter (+/-) coil.

What do you guys think?
Thanks a lot! Mike

Hello Mike,

I'm sorry to hear about your financial loss!

Well, I have given your question some thought and think you will be better off going for a PI project. Why? Because the PI will pick up ALL targets containing metal - not only iron. The magnetometer is limited to detecting targets wich are ferrous also it might be too sensitive and will react to your vehicles.

Better go for the PI project.

There are some great folks on this site who will be happy to assist you with your project.#

Please keep us posted.

Thanks and best wishes,

Christian

Hello Mike .  Welcome to Thunting.com . Have your Friend join our Forum too and check out the PI Metal Detector Projects section in our "Tech Talk Area" . Christian is correct , A strong PI Metal Detector with the coil towed by your ATV is your Best Choice !!

Regards.......Eugene

Thanks Eugene, thanks Christian!

Eugene, I believe it was one of your posts that I read recommending the XR71 (I hope I remembered right) for some pretty impressive depths like 10-15 feet!

I can just see me dragging my backhoe out on the desert to dig up some old Mormon Pioneer wagon wheel part! Lol

Would a meter coil need to be dragged at a distance because of ATV interference (like Christian suggested with a magnetometer) or do you think some kind of a hinge to raise and lower it could be possible?

Your experience and knowledge would be invaluable because I don?t believe in ?re-inventing the wheel?
But I am certainly willing to do some experimenting if you haven?t tried MeteorWrong hunting like I?ve been doing.

Thanks Mike

Hello Mike . Actually 10 feet maximum depth is more realistic for the XR71 . Unless you are digging up a Army Tank or a Big Old Cadillac . Anyway I think you will find something on this forum , that will work great on your ATV !!   Keep us posted on your decision .
HH..........Eugene

Hi all,

Just dropping by...I'm almost done with the Golden Sabre...unluckily the FETs aren't available in our locality...have done my order for the FET and I'am looking forward for a replacement that is locally available...

I read on some Australian site about Golden Sabre. That machine have been favoured from many Australian prospectors before Minelab have start to sell his machine. Just interesting info about the quality of Golden Sabres.
