With no load, a FET might avalanche and get hot. Most commercial models have a snubber resister installed so if a customer disconnects the coil it won't burn up the unit. Designers who are not engineers often forget to add one. That DIY design probably is missing a key element for circuit protection.

Just guessing but the symptom he described fits the theory. Only he knows for sure. Now that he has it working, the "2%" guy from Tunisia may stop reading here.
