I have been doing a little research on winding coils and coil design and read that minelab and I presume other companies use litz wire(individualy insulated strands braided into  wire) for winding P.I.  coils i was wondering how many strands they use because most of the wire I have looked at is only effective to about 1.4khz
since I will be using 2mhz-4 mhz crystals  if there is a optimum number of strands or the more the better cheers  Wink

I've always considered Litz wire to be a gimmick. Nothing to be gained that good shielding won't cover.

I do not believe litz wire is a Gimmick  if it is properly wound and fed to the machine....  low power crystal radio aficionado's use it in  there Arial's and coils  so its ability to capture low power signals has merit. I think the closer you can get the discrete wires to the processing unit the better your signal is going to be. Wink I have been doing a little investigation into marko rodans coils and wondering if some of the winding configurations have any viability Wink   cheers johnny

It's a gimmick, all right. There's a lot of money to be made when you sell the stuff for $10 a meter. Why insulate your coil with a sheild? It makes no sense at all.

The sweet girl in the video is making her own Litz wire even if it is a gimmick it is enjoyable to watch  Wink  and if you watch a little more you can check out the output the magnetic field the thing kicks out they are using the coil for other esoteric applications but it may hold some potential  merit in detector coil applications  Cheers  Wink johnny23

I have used one of the energy meters that the fellow in the video is using and he was getting hi magnetic output from the  rodin coil about 8 or ten feet away so I was thinking for a P.I.  detector it may be used to increase depth... cheers  Wink johnny23

I know all about them, mate. I used to live in Australia and my opinion is that they are only interested in making a killing selling wire that does nothing special. Go ahead and find another source for the wire. If it does all they claim, there should be dozens of sources. Humor me. Find another place to get the wire. And don't use eBay. They sell it under several names. All at the same very high price.

But you know what? You go ahead and use it. Your choice.

Everything I've read about Litz wire points to Skin Effect IE Resistance.  Nothing that can't be overcome with larger wire?

Not with the low power we're discussing. Litiz wire was formerly used in very old tube radios for those huge spider web antennas. It was good as a receiver but I have never seen it used successfully to increase output power or linearity (their main claim) in a metal detector circuit. It reminds me of the LRL guys. Nothing to back it up except hokum.

Hi Gdogg

Welcome to the forum, please post your introduction in the new members board so that members can get to know you. Interesting experiment that you did with the litz wire, thanks for posting your result.
