Hi,
No the performance is very good (when you can stop it drifting), it'll find a three quarter inch coin at around 11 - 12".
I had a good look at it last night and I think I might know what the prob is.
The coil cap. is supposed to be 1000uf, it only reads 720 on my meter.

A capacitor of that value is an electrolytic and is polarized. Measure it backwards, and you get an incorrect reading. Note the polarity and be sure you have it installed correctly. At low voltages and current, installing it backwards is rarely fatal but if it is dead, replace it with a new one. If not, reverse it and try again.

Hi,
The microprocessor is a 16f84 /04
The crystal is 4mhz.
Am I right in thinking this is pushing it to its max spec?
Would a 16f84 /20 be better?

Paul I just had a look at the data sheet and what I found was that the 16f84A is the newer version of the 16f84-04/p it also states that the max frequency is 10Mhz so unless I miss read (I'm having a bad day)you should be fine with the one that you have.

Thanks X,
I've discovered that the max frequency is 4 mhz on the / 04 version.
I might just try the "A" version as they are quite cheap and can go to 10mhz so should run comfortably at 4.
I did read somewhere (can't find it now - typical!) that the 04 version could get a little iffy  when run at its max.

Ok Paul glade you found the specs I looked for the xxxxx/04 and the data sheet had 10Mhz max so I guess that I looked at the wrong one  Undecided

No don't think so!
The problem with a lot of data sheets is they give the specs for the top of the range part and fail to mention that the lesser ones might not have the same spec!

Paul,

You do realize that the PIC is not a drop in replacement. It has a program in it that makes it work properly. Do you have a PIC programmer? Do you have the source code or the HEX file for the PIC?

The cap wasn't measuring right (but it was still in circuit so maybe that didn't help) took it out and it measured up better (around 970uf).
Replaced it with a much higher quality one which measured correctly.
Depth actually increased slightly but still "drifting".
Actually may do the same with the rest of the caps as they look pretty low quality too.
