I am building an PI detector as a project but I want to purchase an "off the shelf" search coil but I am having trouble finding any information about whats inside. I have a Garrett Infinium LS coil and it has 4 wires(grn, whi, red, black) but I dont know why there are 4 instead of 2. any help with the anatomy of this coil or a suggestion on simple commercial one would be much appreciated.

Generally speaking a PI coil uses only one loop while most other types of detector use two. That means 4 wires versus 2 for yours. To make things more confusing, a fifth wire which you can't see is necessary. Without it, the wires that run down your shaft from the electronics to the coil would transmit and receive just like the loop at the end. That fifth wire is a shield wire which keeps the wires running down the shaft from becoming radiators and receivers on their own. It's attached inside the connector to the metal of the connector body which goes to ground or earth inside the electronics box.

ok thanks. so i tore apart my old Bounty Hunter VLF coplaner search coil and it has the same color wires as the infinium coil. This makes me think that maybe they use this coil for other models then just the infinium and i should be ignoring the red, black wires and only use the green, white and the shield wire to ground. does it sound like im on the right page?

Color coding in coils is meaningless. There is no standard. What you need to do is measure the impedance and see if it matches what you need.
