Elektor #79 1981 VLF MD; Delta Pulse 2 (Elbombaci).

Hi 6666

I have tested my Delta Pulse 2 according to your suggestion and have found the following results:

1.  Placing the metal detector's coil flat on some humid lawn (grass), and moving the 1 Euro coin towards it with the coin face parallel with ground: distance was approximately 30 cm;
2.  When the 1 Euro coin was buried underneath dry white beach sand, the metal detector gave a response when the distance was roughly 26 to 28 cm.

Presumably the detection distance will be less than 26 cm when the white beach sand contains significant amount of salt water. I will be testing this when I visit the beach during the summer (December).

It would be interesting to find out what results Ran obtained with his Delta Pulse which was built according to Eugene52, as opposed to mine which was built according to Elbombaci.

Hope this answers your query satisfactorily.

Please find 2 pics of Delta Pulse 2  that I built.

Ciao

Hi Speedy_G
thank you for testing your MD with coil on the grass, this is a very good result for comparing with other projects, I have a one and two euro coin to compare my projects with.
It will be interesting to see your results from the wet sand, I noted that you changed the speaker to a piezobuzzer .

Thanks also for the pictures of your MD, you have done a nice job
just wondering what are the specs of the coil you made ?
thanks
cheers

Hi 6666

You ask for the specs of my coil. Well, the coil was the most challenging task for me to build. It was only my second coil I built, the first being a double D (transmit-receive) for the legendary Elektor VLF metal detector for which no instructions were provided.
As BBsailer mentioned in his article on making a fast monocoil, you need to get the parasitic capacitances down as much as possible. Thats what I proceeded to achieve.
So the first thing to do was to use teflon-coated copper wire. I threaded 22 metres of normal 29 SWG e.c.w. through the teflon tubing (about 0.5 mm internal diameter). It is fairly easy to do so with some patience and a little help from a friend, because the teflon tubing offers very little resistance while the copper wire is being pushed through (I happened to obtain lots of teflon tubing for free).
The rest of the specs for my coil was as follows: diameter of the coil was just under 8.9 inches (225 mm); 22 metres total length of copper wire, giving approximately 31 turns (resistance was 4 ohms).
The final thing was to shield the coil. This I proceeded to do with copper braid which I extracted from old microphone cables by firstly securing the braid (I dipped the braid briefly into molten solder that I had in a steel pot, and shook off the excess solder). I simply then slit the tubular braid cutting it lengthwise with a sharp scissors, and finally, the braid was laid flat on a clean surface. All that remained was to wrap the braid (essentially following BBsailor's method) tightly and neatly around the coil windings. Obviously, you need to have a gap somewhere between the two ends of the braid so that you do not defeat the whole purpose of the shielding. This shielding ensures that capacitance due to ground effects is kept to a minimum. Obviously, the shielding is connected (by soldering it quite easily) to the positive ground of the PCB control circuitry.

Hope this helps someone.

Ciao
