for 1x1 mtr coil use: enamelled copper wire #24 swg. you can try the 8turns=1.9 ohm or 16 turns. w/c suits to your needs. eg. depht of target and size.

It's a cute idea but conceptually flawed because the wires are not simply scattered inside of the cable like you might imagine. The real configuration is twisted pairs inside of a sheaf and the twisted pairs will change the overall impedance making it a mismatch. Give up the idea. Use the recommended wire which is magnet wire.

GoldDigger1950 is right. ADSL cables are made to protect conductor from EMI while a metal dectector has the opposite requirement.
If you don't want to spend money you can extract the laminated Cu wire from transformers - at least thats what I am planning to do.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Are you expecting a different answer? The wire you suggested is not suitable. Use magnet wire. Lash out and spend the $10.00 on a roll of it.

That would also work provided you could get the right diameter wire. Another small problem is that when the transformers in TV sets warm up from being on, the varnish sometimes sticks the wires together. This causes bare spots in the wire as you unwind it. Cheap solution? Yes. Reliable? Maybe, maybe not.

For my  1 meter square coil I used regular rubber insulated electrical wire  . 6 Strands . Color coded  . Take the insulatin off from both sides  . Say 5 inches .  Connect the green color to the red color to the bue color  etc etc .  You will end up with the two ends  . Use the shield as your ground .    Works like you have never seen before .  Cornelius   ( and it is cheap ! )

It depends on the wire, Cornelius. The ADSL cable he wanted to use would not work. Ordinary bell wire would work but the twisted pair wiring in the ADSL wire would cancel his signal. It's manufactured to keep fields from generating around it in the audio range.

I mean  one electrical rubber insulated wire with 6 or 8 core wires , individually colorcoded and insulated  . Solder the wires together , one color to the other coler . Insulate with crimp insulation . Makes a nice coil .   Cornelius
