If you want to build a "Pulse Induction" Metal Detector , here is a very educational and informative 20 page tutorial-study with a few great illustrations.

 Great...............................Eugene52

very interesting, just a few minutes here and there and ive already learned more about metal detectors than anywhere else ive looked.

has anyone ever used a reflector over the top of the search coil to focus more of the energy in only one direction? i am guessing that the pulse radiates both down into the ground and also in the opposite direction(up into the air)?

Hello electech2u , you are correct !! Search coils are typically designed to have more Magnetic field focused under the coil instead of on top facing your shaft/rod of the Metal detector . Some manufactures have a non-metalic lower shaft To eliminate false signals of your own machine . I guess a Field strength circuit can be built for Directional Magnetic testing of your search-coil  !!! Concentic coils are sharper for pin-pointing and DD is much more efficient with less magnetic field occuring above the search-coil . Metal shielding above the coil might be difficult to perfect . I think experimenting with the coil windings is the key to making directional coils Great...................................Eugene52

do any of the metal detectors employ a trigger so you can switch coils "on the fly" ?

Hello , as far as I know , I do not think someone has Manufactured a dual or triple search coil that is toggle switched at the Detector . Even Minelabs Exterra series you have to physically change the coils to different frequencies to be more efficient on gold nuggets or  coin detecting . I am sure you can invent a dual or triple search coil configuration  , but they will have to spaced so far apart and also the added extra weight will be a negative . Or even some multiple coil windings out of phase in ONE "search-coil enclosure" might be impossible to engineer with a remote switch  . Engineers have already tested these things  , trying to Re-Invent the wheel again , or inventing a new improoved wheel  Crazy Shocked Grin. Great Ideas you are posting , Directional High power Search coils  Great

if you used more than one coil the would have to all resonate with each other and the trigger on the handle would have to  switch the configuation of which coil is the driven element/reflector/director which would serve to focus the beam width and gain of the array. weight would have to be addressed with maybe carbon fiber materials such as are used in racing bikes.

with higher gain you could also use lower power and the battery life would increase

I was wondering, is there a tuning adjustment on the board to match the circuit to the coils?
