Hi,
Strange question maybe, but if you could design a P.I. detector that put much higher voltage across the coil (in the order of say 2 - 5 kv) would you gain any extra depth?

I used a small battery . Than I changed to a   7AH / 12V battery and I had a far better reception of the signal . You have to remember that the coil has a certain resistance . The field of the coil should be a lot stronger when you use more power .   Cornelius  p.s. you should take in consideration that the detector itself only can handle a certain amperage unless you want to fry it .

Maybe this is not clear to you so I have to change it a bit . The higher the current your detector will tolerate  ( taking the total resistance of the unit in consideration) the larger the current trough your coil can be . The larger the current through the coil , the larger the field around the coil will be . The larger the field in your coil the deeper it will detect .

The game with a PI is to Send a signal and wait and Hear the Return Eddy current signal.

If you pump out a Kilowatt of power your Wait time is going to diminish your sample time and take to long to see or hear the return.

Hi,
I wasnt thinking about kilowatts of power - rather kilovolts at a low amperage  Idea

2 kV on a Standard Coil of 0.5 Ohm would lead to 8 MW Power.
You would need a Nuclear Power Plant as a Power Supply for this.
The Coil needs to be very heavy to survive the 4000 Ampere Current.

Its smarter to optimize the Receiver Circuit (low Noise).

EDIT : High Voltage at low current wont make a stronger magnetic Field,
because this depends on Current x Number of Windings.

 Tongue

It's all the same!

Your just putting power or potential in the same place!

Current sets up the Magnetic field yes.
But The Voltage sets up the Current!

Best to keep things low power and quiet!

Listen to the Stars kinda thing!

Can you hear them?   Yep!  Just be quiet!

Hi
I always thought that to create a magnetic field it was either:

Low voltage/high current

or:

High voltage/low(er) current

Maybe I'm wrong  - I just thought there might be some unexpected gains by going a "sideways" route ......  Idea

Electrical power is a give or take or all!

You have the Push!

The source or amount!

Or unlimited all.

On this you need limited source and a quiet time to hear the echo!

If you send out to much your just going to hear the Echos!

Hi,
Well, I'm going to give it a go using a very short pulse time at around 2kv.
It might work...... it likely won't .... but at least it'll keep me quiet for a while!
 Crazy
