The funny thing is that I also had problem with the PI and mineralization even though everyone says that the PI is not disturbed by it. One thing that I must say though is that I did not shield the coil, this was a mono coil PI detector.

X Dude, that Machine you are Building is Eric Fosters Pre TDI Model isn't it, Huh?

Well it should Blast through Mineralised Ground and if you take the SD, GP and the GPX's then you will see that Bad ground does not worry them and the same with my TDI SL or Garrett Infinium ETC,  and in medium ground you can turn the ground Balance Off and boost the depth and in the dry sand at the beach and in the wet sand you will still pull coins at 16 - 20 inches +/- using the standard coils,

The Fact is The Soul Purpose of A Pulse Induction Machine is to ignore Mineralisation, that is its only Purpose, If you are having issues with it dealing with Bad Ground then it is Not Working Correctly,

Watch this Video of how Magnetic this ground is, It is that bad his Magnet ends up all Furry and yours should be able to do this Too,,, Enjoy.

I can understand that putting to much shield on to your coils would build up a pretty bulky housing.  But think of this for a moment.  The more in tune the system is the better the sensitivity and depth you will get.  Less interference (outside of what is produced)  Both in the VLF and PI the more proper discrimination you will get, which in turn produces better quality finds. If you think your PI isn't effected by not shielding it, remember the pulses produced from your TX act as the primary (like in a transformer),  those pulses bleed over to your RX coil (like the secondary of a transformer coil) causing less efficient machine.  If you shield your TX coil and RX coil you reduce that over produced inductance.  Yes it might be less of a noticeable difference, but with finding items in different soils, that little bit may make your day or break it.

No this was with the DBP2010 that I build 4 or 5 years ago.

Remember that the machine that I was talking about is a mono coil, but shielding the coil could make all the difference, as I said the coil was not shielded
