There's no such thing as a complicated pi coil to buil, VLF yes and only because of the bucking coil. A home made coil with work just as well as a bought coil if not better if you build it correctly.  There is a lot of good information about coils, I suggest that you have a look at the one posted in the geotech  forum, there is the link for you at the top of my post (some how could not get it at the bottom of the page using my tablet)

Have fun and a great built.

hi X, when i said building the coil was the hardest part i mean mechanically, winding a pi coil is quite easy as you said, but making a shell and getting it watertight can be a real pain.
i recommend searching for "don bowers coil shells" on google he makes and sells some good ones, cheap too.

p.s. added a link to dons page

The Sirf PI is like the old Sand banks.  Simple, Works and Kicks Ass. I'm working on finding a way for it to get below on a Sample Delay of 10 us!   This is were gold is.  With the right sample and Coil I think it can do it.  I don't care much about the Ground Balance. I started on a BFO and learned the tunes.

No detector is that good.   You need to do more research on Metal Detector.    It seems you do not know there limits.
