It's been my experience (many years ago) that NTE replacements -- when you could find them -- were a "one size fits many" situation, which might fit the design or might not. I personally try hard to find the exact part the engineer specifies, which is usually specified for several reasons, mostly because that's what satifies the calculated parameters. A close replacement may "work ok", but not as well as the design was meant to work.

thanks eugene, it is rev 1.2, still dont have the IC so have some time to look a little closer. i found an old coil being thrown away lucky for me it also came apart real easy. im sure i looked like my dog when he gets a big old bone, has to run around and show it to everyone and cant sit still. took some pics and was wondering if you have any idea if i can alter it to make it work with a pi. i didnt know if a double d config would work or not and if so should i wire the coils in series or parallel? i assume i have to ditch the board in the coil?

thanks VPR

How big is it?

Maybe you can twist up a mono coil and use the housing.

it's 6.5 inches, i already stripped the coil out and wound a 6" 23 turns of 26 ga magnet wire @ 1.44 ohms resistance. i looked up the pi pro coil on another site and figured that would be a good starting point. post some pictures when i get a little more done, still trying to figure out the shaft and placement of everything. main hold up is i need a compact and highly portable unit. a standard detector is too big to suit my needs on a desert mountain trip. i think im going to add a gps to the detector. my current thoughts are to use a swivel sweeper shaft and clip the electronics on the side. it will break down into 15" pieces and fit in a pack. i kept the coil extreamly light which was the purpose in choosing the cheep RS detector coil.

Hi!

I?ve built the surf 1.2. I think, it is a good idea that metal detector in a PVC tube! I have some problem. I use e litle power supply (it was tested more projekt) but with  9V (exactly 8,8V) my surfmaster didnt work. Specifically the 4093 didn?t got good level input. Then  I believed the 7660 original circuit (frekvency for the 555 3pin) is right and I started use it.

So the surf started the work, but sensitivity was very minimal and signal weak. I changed the power for 11,5V and it work better (but not perfect). It is normal? I think surfmaster work with 3x9V battery. On the schematic are 9-12V power.

Can you help me? Can I use only 9V?
