Now stop scaring the natives, mate. All they need to be safe is to spin around three times in front of a mirror while touching their nose with their left thumb and say the ancient Inca dehexing chant "Oh watta nass eye emm!" three times.

All this is way beyond me but you obviously need something to take into account the fact that magnetometer readings are bound by the requirement of the cubic law where the distance from the object is proportional to the size of the objects detected by a factor of 4.  On that bais a logger that determines the distance fromt he object also needs to have something the gauges the size of the object.  On a marine magnetometer this is either calculater by specific software or by analysing the shape and intensite of the loop provided by the readings of nt as you pass over the object.  A simple data logger in my view won't give you all that?? Or am I wrong ??

Obviously what I have just said won't apply to pulse induction in terms of nt's but the priciple is very similar

If you can digitally analyse the strength of the readings and the distance from maximum intensity then your logger should be able to give you some reliable data provided that you have a starting point in terms of the readings from the surrounding area where no metallic objects are within the range of the detector.

Hi,

I'm new here. I have built a PI with a USB interface. Actually I (My company) intend to sell as a module for DIY.
What it is, is a PI metal detector that allows a USB host (PC, Tablet, I-phone eventually) to read the signal level of the detector.

To solve your problem, it would be easy enough to have a small laptop, and connect the detector, and separately connect a GPS receiver. Using your laptop, run separate applications, one to log signal against time, one to log GPS position against time. Or you could open a note-pad and just record significant GPS locations.
You do have to carry a laptop around, (you can get quite small ones these days).

Anyway. the detector I have designed. Is a PI.  The signal from the coil can be read on the USB port as a 16 bit value at any point in the discharge curve (any sample delay).
it can operate stand-alone (No computer attached).
The sampling system is different to standard PI detectors. It requires no gain adjust.
Threshold (ground zeroing) is done with a button.

as pic controlled pi's were here with screens and pic circuits that can store data for quick replay and data analization ex. is the pic controlled signal analyzer circuits in one pi box. usb data logger is useless as well as the laptop.

Yes, PIC is good for a PI detector.
The PI discharge curve happens in less than 100u Seconds but you can sample and hold a section of this, and look at it and display it on an LCD Yes.
This is how many PI designs work.

The design I am talking about is far more advanced, it requires very fast AtoD conversion not possible with a PIC even with a high speed AtoD conversion IC.
The design I refer to can see more information at higher resolution.
It requires processing only possible in a PC, 'Target signatures' can be stored and recalled.
The most advanced PI detector in the world can not be achieved with just a PIC.
I am talking about the future.

can you post the schematic, so that it will be analyzed as well as the circuit functions.

Hi,
Unfamiliar how to post this circuit diagram:

You are not allowed to view links.
Please Register or Login

http://www.emx.net.au/SPI-EG-1.pdf

(I am new to this forum.)
The circuit..
It has a processor Cypress PSOC, and a USB interface FT232RL.
The signal is sampled by setting the voltages on the comparators that feed into the D flip flop.
In this way, the voltage at any point on the curve can be measured.
Note, there is no analog amplifier or gain required.
The resistor banks are a DtoA converter to control voltages.

Any questions on the circuit, I can answer.
