VLF (Very Low Frequency) machines are normally fixed frequency machines that send a signal from a transmit coil and receive field emanations from eddy currents which are created in metal objects underground. The metal's content, shape, orientation and depth all affect the signal return.

PI (Pulse Induction) machines generation a square wave pulse. To understand this type of machine, you need to be made aware that a square wave is actually a multitude of frequencies and not just an on/off function. PI machines energize metal in the same way that a VLF machine does but the eddy currents fields are quite a bit different due to the frequencies involved. Also, a PI machine may have only one coil which serves as both transmit and receive. Some have two. Manufacturers differ in opinion over which is more efficient regarding pulse timing and field collapse.

Depending on what kinds of metal targets you are searching for, each can be as powerful as the other.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

From my experiences in the field, I can say without reservation that the VLF is more able to do the different aspects of cpoin and jewlry huning that most folks do----the pulse machines or PI units do have decent depth and even better depth than VLF in salty beach areas where the mineralization is high or on land sites where mineralization is high. But there is a drawback to the PI unit. You don't have much discrimination capability in most PI units. I've had to literally dig all signals while water hunting with these units. Go with VLF if you want decent disc capability. Go with PI if you want it to hunt those very mineralized soils or wet salt beaches.
