Hello Has anyone out there built a PI using a PIC chip or chips? Would be greatly interested in hearing.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Glad that you replied Xavier. Sorry to hear about your loss. Some PICs are expensive. If it is not being too nosey, could you tell me which PIC you are using? Just curious.

I was going to be using the 16lf1939 but then I found that the PicKit2 does not support it so I thought I'd start doing some timing tests with a pic 16f877a but as you already know when I started to do some testing I went and fried it (very stupid of me) anyways now I'm waiting to get a new one. Getting the timing to work right is the hard part in my opinion,  or I'm just not going about it in the right way.

You don't need a lot of processing power or speed to use a PIC chip for a PI detector. A 16f628A or 16F648a will be plenty and also allow you to have a digital display and 2 tone.
More later.

Yes but that limits me to 2048 words and I need quite a lot because I've got preset selection and storing, I need to be able to output information on the LCD like the storage location, mind you these things can be left out for now.

Xavier,
Not to be a smartxxx, but sometimes the Tim (the tool man) Allen approach can be exasperating. We all want more, but do we always need it? How about using a second 16F628a to do nothing but addressing a larger static ram chip and the first one just to generate and drive and process the reflected signal. You know....delegating control. The one I am working on right now does just that. One little 12f675 to generate drive, one 16f628a to process the reflected pulse and drive an LCD and a third 12F675 to generate audio tones. All are synced by a single clock chip. Makes it easier to troubleshoot when something happens. Would love to hear what you think.
