I need to find a large object in a lake and would like the widest coil possible.  Could I make a 6'x6' and pull it into a 10' x 2'?  Or make a 20' long x 6" wide?  Depth won't be important since it should be right on the bottom.

Why not use what the professionals do? Use a Proton Magnetometer. All metals will affect it even gold but the strongest return is from ferrous. The second choice, but not by much, is side looking sonar mapping. Both will give you excellent results for large, underwater items.

How Does Gold Work on a Mag?   That would be a first for Me?  They only work on Ferrous metals in my past.

Magnetic returns and Even Gravity returns are so small From Gold you have to have some Serious Equipment there.  LOL

The pulse deep seeker is within my budget.  If I could buy a sidescan sonar and proton mag, I would be sitting in my condo sipping a cold one and not diving in zero visibility punching gators in the head.  Tongue

The 6'x 6' coil would work fine, I would just have to make more passes in the lake but I'm thinking I can make it wider.   I will experiment with different coil arrangements when I receive my detector but I'm sure someone on here knows about this.

Laugh if you want, Homefire. Gold does affect the magnetic lines of flux in the earth if it is concentrated. But then, how would you really know that. Why not ask Willie?

I suggest you rent one. No need to buy one. If what you seek is worth finding, you might even get a break on a rental if you are willing to share.

I checked into renting a marine magnetometer and it's around $500/week.  Not too bad.  Thanks for the idea.

I emailed my deep seeker manufacturer and he told me these coil sizes that I could use.  This is what he told me:

You can use cat5 or car6 cable and make different coils.

50cm x 1.5m 8turns with single wire (1 turn with cat5 or cat6)

50cm x 3.5m  4 turns with single wire

50cm x 5m 3 turns with single wire.

This absolutely will not yield satisfactory results. The manufacturer has obviously never tried this but is relying on DIY types who have tried it. You will get SOME results, but the twisted pair configuration of CAT5 or CAT6 cable will defeat and diminish your field. I guarantee it.
