I've had a few from the U.S. try to retire over to the U.K. near me in recent years hoping that metal detecting will help out with the bills. The longest lasted a year.

Fuel just goes up and up and you need to sell a palace in the U.S. to buy a small house here. Detectors can be twice the price and no five or lifetime warranty. Two years if your lucky.

My council has just started sacking staff (and paying out redundancy) whilst they are trying to force the sick back into work. Trouble is no jobs !

Then add that the senior citizens who are trying to eak out their savings to pay for things like heat and water that go up in price more than inflation each year and are taxed on their savings even though you can't get a rate that matches, never mind beats inflation. Its no wonder Britain is way down the list for places to live.

Putting up the retirement age is really helping !! and its open house for anyone who should want to come here and there's still plenty of handouts going for immigrants who have never paid into the system. We borrow money to give away !

these people have already paid the tax on the money that they've managed to save in the first place when they first earn't it, so then that's another lot of tax and if they spend that money now they pay another 20%, so you get taxed 3x for that money then every year after that. Thanks Gordon Brown for this mess you left us in, we'll pay your bills that you left us too!, You've been very quite hiding away since you lost your golden goose, come and spend a week in my world then you can enjoy the real results of your efforts

I just paid $2.89 for a gallon of the lowest grade unleaded gas.  I put it in my Toyota Carolla that I bought when gas hit $4.00 a gallon.  I traded in my nice big beautiful Nissan Xterra 4X4 because I thought gas was going to $5.00 a gallon.  I knew becuase of years of experience when gas goes up it does not come down.  Well it did.

Economy in Texas Panhandle is holding.  Still have moderately low unemployment, and they are still building new homes.  San Antonio where I am headed is still booming.  Son in real estate says they can't build fast enough.

This has been an interesting post to follow. It's reading like, regardless of where we live, we're mostly getting fleeced, nickel & dimed. I think Germany is probably the most solid country right now. I remember several years ago their citizens saved 9% of their earnings while US folks were "putting away" a negative %. Germany has strong manufacturing & productivity - they seem to be holding their own real well. That's the impression I get, anyway.

I don't know how commerce can absorb that.  Everything must be really high there, like food.

When it comes to buying things like Steak, joints of beef you have to shop around I don't know what the price is cos it's been a while since i went shopping but it can be more than $16.00 per pound depending on the cut,
I know that when i convert prices for detectors etc like the V3i has a list price of $2,226.38us the mxt is $1051.65us the tdi $2023.84us you can get the a little cheaper but not that much.

Pity those who Disarm them selves.

What  a Hoot!  In the UK and Australia,,  they took away the guns.

Now they Use Clubs, Knives, swards and Rocks to do the same.

The Smart ones use Explosives.

You know the stuff under the kitchen sink.

If they take away everything that can go BOOM, you will be living in the Dark Ages! LOL!

No Bleach, No Ammonia, No Lie, No Aluminum Foil, No Cooking Oil, No Baking Soda, No acids of any kind.  (Lemon Juice, Lime juice, Vinegar toilet cleaner that contain Hydrochloric of any kind).

What a Hoot, and What a Shame.

Last time I purchased Nitric acid to test for gold, I had to sit in front of someone and read  MSDS  twice, Sign my name three times, one was a anti terest note.

What a Hoot.

All I wanted was a Pint!

Yep..... I live in the country.
The local farm gave me a load of pork as part of a "deal" (That's how it works out here - do someone a favour and they'll return it)
So..... decided I would make some sausages.
Went to the chemist in town and asked to buy some Potassium Nitrate (used in tiny amounts as a preservative)..... They called the police!
Let me go after 20 minutes of questions, but .... what the hell!
At least I have my shotgun still, but even so the local "firearms officer" is bit of a security "nutter" and I'm sure won't be happy until no one has a shotgun, rifle whatever. (that would be funny.... then he'd have no job!)
Yep life in the good old U.K. is S**t at the moment.
And we are about to spend ?40 Million on another "royal wedding"....... talk about getting your priorities right.......  Angry Angry

Hello all

Thank you all for the interesting comments Sue is right there is much to learn from one another here. Even prices what you are paying for core items you can compare with the place you live.

I think we are being played for fools.

Example 1 Mobile telephones who really knows what you really are paying for with these complex plans?

Example 2 Electricity company's are adopting mobile Telephone type plans to your electricity charges. In other words there is no set rate like petrol but the rate increase depending on demand. If its a hot day and more using the air conditioner then the demand goes up and you pay more.

Example 3 Supermarket chains the prices vary depending if it is an affluent suburb or not.

Any of that seem familiar?

Now just a quiz the all of us.

Just a quick comparrasion of everyday items. How much the average cost of those items in your place?

Milk $2.60 for 2 litre AUS

a Dozen Eggs $ 2.99 AUS

loaf of Bread  $3.10 AUS

I was in New Zealand last year it cost me about $11.50 AUS for those three items.

Thanking you all in Advance.

Hardluck

well, working it out in Aus dollars:

milk - 2.57

eggs - 3.1

bread - 2.5

So, around 8.17 Aus for those.... a little cheaper I guess.
