Wide Mouth Frog sluice design

In the past few years I have found small gold flakes in the surface of many small rivers and streams in Wales and English border counties, just using a Henderson pump, quarter inch classifer and bucket, and, of course a pan. Too often the river is almost dry, and it becomes almost impossible to operate even a small sluice. Result, the operation has to be halted, and when I return some weeks later, the river or stream is a torrent. Sod's law is a good test of character.

Maybe other prospectors here may have encountered this dryup problem.

So, I am making some new halfscale sluices which I hope will provide a solution. Maybe the big manufacturers can be persuaded to get them into production.

The principle, which has probably been tested before, is to have a much wider funnel and dump area, and a narrower body. I have made one prototype and it works even with small cobbles, but the outflow area fills up quickly unless there is a good gradient below the sluice.

However, I have included some dinks and kinks which I haven't seen in the pro sluices, which might work for the diy sluicemakers here. If any members here want to test out my dinks and kinks for themselves, please send a pm and agree to a confidentiality clause. I don't mean to withhold info for the general good, its just that if together we can get to a really new and cool sluice design for difficult locations, it might be worth selling on to the commercial manufacturers later on. Let's work together on this and make it happen, one day, maybe, but have fun doing it at least.

Sounds like you could use a small Recirculating system Cool

You bet it would, everything you need could be packed into a plastic storage container about 2 to 3 feet long 14" wide and 14" deep.  in the container is your sluice, frame, bilge pump, SLA battery and tubing with valve necessary to hook up pump to the spray bar.   Depending on how far it had transported you could either carry it or put it on a two wheeled cart and pull it along behind you.  How's that for portability.

Yep!    Sounds like you would have enough water to fit the bill.

Dig a small Sump to get ya started.

I researched the small recirculating sluice system which was suggested. Not sure this would work in my various locations.
I need to move tonnes of classified material in many cases, and batteries wouldn't last with this much dirt. So, I will test my new widemouth frog sluice, made of steel plate, fibreglass and 2inch riffles, in the field next weekend and report back.

Sounds like a plan.

Those pumps don't use that much power.

I've had one running for 6 hours or more on a single charge on a small truck battery.

Thanks Homfire. If we need one I'm sure my landowners will be able to tractor a battery or two to the sites, if the water dries up entirely.
