Yep, even here in Wales thieves have been caught on camera breaking into dangerous mine adits. Two of these adventurous chaps even posted photos of their loot on a new website, looking for investors. When challenged they claimed that the samples were from a private collection and not fresh from the mine, as appeared to be originally the case. This is lazy prospecting indeed. There are so many undiscovered claims out there to be sought out. And if an honest prospector approaches an honest landowner with an offer to prospect on a 50/50 basis, this mostly leads to good results, unless there really is nothing there.

It has been one of the greatest thrills of my long life to be able to visit farmers in Wales and, after a few hours of sluicing, present one after another with the proof that they have a gold bearing river on their property. This makes friends for life.

[Q]"if an honest prospector approaches an honest landowner with an offer to prospect on a 50/50 basis"[/Q]

When I'M providing 100% of the experience, equipment, and sweat the split ain't gonna be 50-50. I'll consider 80-20, otherwise it can stay in the ground.

20% of a million dollars is a lot of money to me.

I'll provide the Equipment. Time and Effort for that. Cool

Right, $200,000 IS a lot of money! If we find that in someones back yard, wouldn't we be happy to share it with them? Chances are better we'd be spitting a few flakes and a couple rocks?

We've let folks mine at our gold claims.  But, we have also had folks try to chase US off at gunpoint, people pass right by our mining operation and go into one of our adits, try to file over our claim, and one guy we gave permission to - just to him - brought back a gold mining club - and then gave us an argument.

We caught one guy highgrading, and he had the nerve to want to go back into the adit to get his bottle of gold. Sheesh!

Sorry to hear you had this problem. I've also helped guys to learn the basics about goldpanning at lovely locations in Wales, and some of them promptly started telling weird stories about me on various forums. However, I have made some good friends too. Dealing with the rogues isn't always easy of course, but we shouldn't let them spoil our positive frame of mind, which is essential for prospecting.

I'm always glad to hear about helping new people learn the basics. I would have loved for someone to do that for me when I started out.  And, we have, quite frequently, in fact - done just that.  Some folks are really appreciative - and, we have even let people take home a bucket or two from the claims, to play with at home, or to teach their spouses and children how to pan.
I think its kinda neat to see a new person pan their first few pans, and see that first gold show up - it hooks them for life.  The more people who get involved in treasure hunting - whether metal detecting, or panning or dredging - the more people we have on "our" side, when some others are trying to keep us off public land, or accuse all treasure hunters of being greedy theives - its always good to have allies.  Wink

Yep!       Most people don't know that if you go through the trouble to locate the claim owner and ask them, they will allow you to go play for a day or so .

Most just ask you report to them your finds and where you found them.   Your just doing work for them.  LOL

I have ask about 20 and only been turned down twice.

By just asking your telling them your OK! Huh?

Best to get a E-mail letter and keep it in hand for the trip.   Most will give you a Kitchen Pass for a few days or a week.

Never leave a mess and Clean up what ya find.

Works out for me. Wise
