Go Up Go Down

Hi Everyone,
We are building a large sluice for our trommel, and we debating between riffles and not.. but also the difficulty in calculating the right hieght, as we need to maintain a certain level of water flow and velocity. But further more using carpets with riffles at the begining and then miners moss for the second half.
Any thoughts our comments on this? Perhaps some help on working out the correct system to use on a large 10m sluice?
Thanks

Well that was the reason we are planning to use Rifles

the trommel will be processing aproximately 100tonnes per hour! so decent size!

using about 3000litres of water per minute!

I have already seen your link, and yes it was useful. I guess I was just not sure how applicable it was to our operation as we are a medium size capital intesive operation, using several excavators, dump trucks, trommel etc.
So I was not to sure if the same principals followed a larger sluice, as we are looking to build a 10m long sluice, as we unforunately do not have a centirfuge at the end to collect anything that may have been missed. So we want to ensure that we approach it with the right mannor and get our riffles correct for our sluice..
Unforunately we do not have any pics! We are still at the starting process and will be starting in the following weeks to come.
Our thoughts were to use a green carpet for the first 5m, with riffles ontop and wedged down aprox. 1inch high, as our trommel will be classifying to 1/4 inch, and then minners moss for the remaining 5m of our sluice.

You are the best one to determine what it is your are wanting to sluice out from the slurry (the mixture of mud, water and gold). For large nuggets, which Ghana is known for, you won't require riffles but to collect as much as possible, add them. The old mine tailings from the 1800s here in the US are full of gold the miners of the day missed because they only cared about the big stuff. Today, with gold as high as it is, every particle adds up. Use riffles, pick out your rejects by hand and keep working at the deep crevices with your tools.

Keep us informed as to how you are doing.

thank you all for the advice and help. I will certainly keep you all informed on the progress and best techniques that we go ahead with. I guess my concern was finding information on large sluices for some guidance or information that people would be able to pass one for using a 30ft sluice.
But nonetheless will let everyone know how we progress over the weeks to come.

Forget miner's moss, carpeting and riffles.  Line it with Gold Hog matting.

Talk to Doc there. Has has built the matting to use with industrial gold sluices.  It loves fast water and grabbing gold.  There are 2 types of mat, UR mat and SC (Scruber) matting.  Check it out
