Given the typical bureaucratic mind-set (both governmental and private enterprise) I can see how the typical avoid rocking the boat and cya at any cost bureaucrat could easily over-react to the epa regs Homie linked to....especially given the EPA's recent track record regarding regulations on lead and cadmium, dust in the southwestern states, carbon dioxide emissions, etc.
By the way, if you want to take this as a rant, take it as a rant against people who take the easy way out when faced with a situation they don't understand and don't really care to understand.

LOL!   Yep!   Crazy World.

Out law the stuff then make so you have Use it in CFL Builbs in your home.

Last time I tried to buy some I could only get a Few Grams as Elemental Samples at some Crazy Prices.

If I told People where I can find it in the Natrual Form they would Seal it up with Cement.   LOL

It's not illegal, mate. Where do you come up with this stuff?

So it isn't illegal after all.

Last time I bought some it was 2 pounds of it for a few dollars. It's not against the law to buy, sell or own mercury. Please try not to start a panic.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

My humble suggestion: Forget the semantics and the pissing contests...
The proof is in the video, and that's good enough for me, and is on topic...
Yeah...I use mercury too...
Gosh!

Yes getting back to the topic.
Has anyone ever melted fine gold in a scooped out potato?
Scoop out the centre of a large potato add your fines and cover with borax then apply heat.
You are left with slag and a button of gold.

I'd like to try this potato method one day! Is there any particular kind of potato which is preferable in terms of water content, sugar levels etc?
