Welcome from Arizona.
Finding "expired" mining claims isn't difficult, at least not in the western United States.   It just involves use of a couple of on-line BLM tools

)
followed by verification in the official BLM and County records.
I can even find old claims that are now under housing developments....(doesn't mean I can work them, but I had no trouble finding them  Grin )

Yep!   It can be done.

A friend of mine just lost one back in September.

He was two weeks late filing Maintenance fees.

Someone had over filed on him , Paid the Fees and his laps to there's.

Done Deal.   It is now there's.

It was a good claim, Not Special, But Good.

Now it's gone.

I once scooped up a claim.

It had the Papers posted on the Claim markers all legal like and proper.

Checking for the Owner's permission to pan it, I found he had not filed at the recorders office.

I just filed and paid my fee's.

Returned there and took down his papers and put up mine.

As it turned out, he had bought it off Flea Bay, and it never was his.

He was back in Ohio some place and the Claim was in New Mexico.

Boy was he Pissed.

Not at Me, but the Jack Azz that sold it to him.

I ended up letting him have it after a few years and ran out of money my self.

All Papers Recorded, Done Right !

It was never Dry, Just got good color and if done right could have made money.

I didn't have the money to follow through.

I can't ( Will Not) give you the Claim Name.

I will tell you it was 1/2 Mile north west of here.

I'm in Sacramento Cal area.....Gold Country about 10 miles east of me.  Son in law and I have decided to see about getting a claim set-up.

Ya know, I went to the Geocomm site, checked the expired claims box, and was SURPRISED as there were a ton of claims that showed up between the 50 and 80 fwys along Rt 49 (yeah, that 49, where a large amount of gold has been found over the years).  I'm guessing I'm not doing something correct as there were dozens and dozens of, what the site says, are expired claims.

Any one know a good site that will help me out some.  I found a post here before becoming a member, and thats how I found all these claim sites, but I gotta think I'm doing something wrong, cause there just seems to be too many of them.

Pick a few claim names showing as Delinquent or Abandoned.

Go to Active claims the same locations.

Does anything show?

If not Beat feet to the Recorders office and Check again.

If nothing new has been posted on the location, you can file.

Well, based on the things I've read and what I was expecting...you make it sound easier than I anticipated, lol.  As you might have guessed by a few of my posts already, starting to get serious about obtaining a claim.

Thanks for the answers Home, appreciated.  Guess the BLM site and I need to become better friends than we presently are.  We're heading to the hills this coming weekend, if all goes well, and looking and checking a few locations.  Once we are sure of where we want to be, then I'll go back in to GeoCom and see what appears to be available.  I'll let everyone know what we find and what happens.

If it works out right, just think, you'll have another claim out here in Cal that you'll be able to work on every now and again, I mean, how better to say thanks for the help than with GOLD!  Of course you'll have to dig it out yourself.

mac:to give you an idea,i"ve researched lately on an old claim i had in the 80s,as of 2010 wa.state had 44,000 odd claims filed,667 active,of those 44 are placer.when i filed in the 80s there was about 7 claims in the area i filed.now looking back at those 7 claims 4 were either rock or gravel(3 rock for landscaping,1 gravel for road building for logging co.3 inactive patent claims) you have to dig before you DIG,its an eye opener...good luck on your digging....gimp
