Welcome from Arizona.
Finding "expired" mining claims isn't difficult, at least not in the western United States.   It just involves use of a couple of on-line BLM tools

followed by verification in the official BLM and County records.
I can even find old claims that are now under housing developments....(doesn't mean I can work them, but I had no trouble finding them  Grin )

Thanks for posting the link, its exactly what I have been looking for.

I don't live in AZ but visit relatives there. I try to get out on GPAA claims but wanted to try BLM land in the Miami, AZ area. Can an expired claim be be recreationally worked? Would that fall back under BLM mgmt? I contacted BLM (email) but haven't gotten a response yet to the question of permits for recreational panning and detecting. Is a permit required? Thanks for any help.

Randy

If The Claim is in fact Closed/Voided , Yes you can work it.  There are Rules on soil Disturbance and others that still must be adhered to.

I know this is an old posting, but geo communicator no longer follows up on active or inactive mining claims, and LR2000 is also not functioning properly.  If you want a claim now, you have to go back to the old days, and go into the BLM offices and check the micro-fische.

Yep, they shut down the handy tool in order to curtail the rampant activity in mining with the rise of gold prices.   Sad Sad.

So if the BLM did this then you actually have to go to one of their offices to find the areas of old claims that are inactive to even get the information to where you might want to get a claim. Correct?

Danny your best bet is to do your research,  Boots on the ground to where you think you have a chance.

Look for Claim markers or at least indications it's been worked before.

Marked on a TOPO map, beat feet to the Local (County Recorders Office ) and determine if anything has been Recorded.

Then you go to the BLM.

Yea, It's hard work and Money but that is the best way to do things now days.

If you do find Claim markers, Document the Name of Claim, List of Owners or Owner (Most have multi Names to Expand the Claim Size. Claim Number and do the same.

It may be outdated and Void or Closed.

Hey Homfire, I beleive that most claim markers are posted on a post, tree, rock, or even a metal post.  And through time, alot of these things get damaged or are removed or never seen by someone looking for markers.  Any advice on this?

BLM requires the Markers at the start of the claim.

There is NO mention of maintaining them after claim is made other then Claim Maintenance.   Most Do!

There has been Court cases that prove old holders loose the claim for the same.
