Have you tried digging under it?  I wonder if it could be the end of a quartz vein jutting out of the ground.  Is there a river or stream near-by?  I've busted up lots of them that big unfortunately nothing in them but pyrite.

Here's one I found about the size of yours.  I scanned it with my MD but didn't bust it up.  Homefire is right there could be particles of gold in the rock that the MD won't catch.

The one in the picture has been in moving water because it is rounded and mixed in with other river rock.

Try to find the source of the boulder.   Look for any RED staining.

Are you referring to Gossan stains? If so can you tell us how you use it for analysis or as a clue?

Quartz is a Known carrier of Gold.

Iron too Carries Gold.

Old Prospectors saying.   Gold Rides a Iron Horse.

You look for Red (Iron) Stained Quarts.

Particularly the contact zone between the Quarts and Host rock.

I've got some quartz to deal with as well. What is the best process to classify rock, Keene G-Force to crush, but what to use after that process?
