Go Up Go Down

I have built a hand dredge, through trial and error I am getting there, but still encountering some problems and I know some of you have already been where I'm at and know the answers!! Grin  Here is what I have and my problem...I have a sucker tube of 1 1/2" pipe, with 1" handle.  On the end of the sucker tube I have a Y (which is removable, so as to accommodate another Y for 2 different set ups) the 1st set up has an 1 1/2" check valve on the suction tube end, with a collection container attached to the other end of the Y, it works great!  My problem is with the 2nd set up, here I have a Y attached to the sucker tube, on the suction end is a 1 1/2" check valve, then off the discharge end another 1 1/2" check valve with a hose attached which goes to a bucket...I can pump WATER like crazy!! but every time I pump material after the 1st pump the discharge check valve will hang open with a small rock or even particles of sand and of course then there is the loss of suction from the loss of pressurization...  I have the flapper hinge at the top of the pipe as I learned any other position would cause loss of pressurization from the flapper "drooping" open... How do I solve this problem of clogging up with tiny small rocks??? Should I go to a 2" check valve for the discharge???all help will be appreciated!

In the Prospectors Board, there is plans for a hand suction pump.  Check out how they did it.   I think they used some sort of Reed Valve on the intake.

Try using a Venturi effect pump instead of a direct pump. You create a Venturi effect when small, high pressure water stream is introduced into a larger, low pressure water filled pipe at an angle. The water from the small tube drags the water up the larger tube in the direction of the water flowing in. The pressure of the small tube pulls the water from the large tube. Pumping the clear water will prevent the clogging since the manual hand pump is nowhere near the overburden. Using water creates a flow at around 60% of the input water flow induced by Venturi effect into the output tube.

Using air pressure, much greater water flow is possible. See here:

Don't let the 80cfm air pressure flow scare you off. You can do it with much less. if you combine water and air for a Venturi jet effect, you can probably put some water on the moon.

In doing some searching, I found this article. Just what the doctor ordered.

Something else I thought of is that using a Venturi system will allow you to have foot pegs on the manual pump so you can more easily get the water flowing. Imagine it like a bicycle pump with the pickup in a floating filtered basket going to the pump and into the Venturi chamber. Using the same type of technology a balloon pump uses, you can have water pumped on both cycles, up and down. With an electric water pump for a boat bilge, you can run it from a 12v battery and solar panels.

I may be getting too complicated for your super simple dredge but the possibilities are endless.

Sackett.

I would say that increasing your output valve to 2" would be helpful but before you go to that expense (BTW how big is the tube you are sucking gravel with) run a wire across the opening to restrict the size of stuff you are sucking.  My input tubes on my Mini & Maxi Hovers is small at ?", I had the Mini out about a week or so ago and was having probs with rocks that were a little bit bigger pluging the tube.

It was suggested that I run a wire across the opening that would keep those bigger objects from being pulled in and plugging things up.  Haven't had a chance to test it yet, it keeps bloody raining, but I'm going over to me mums in Eastern Oregon for the Mothers Day weekend and I'll give them a try. I know there's gold over there, Mine cache shows lots of claims, so I might even get a few colors.  The North West corner of seems to be goldless so I'm going to have to travel to get the shiny yellow stuff.
