Copper Pyrite in deed can and does in most cases contain very small amounts of gold.
In most cases, not enough to pay for the effort but some times Yes!
Iron Pyrites on the other hand seldom if ever contains gold and is a true fools gold. [wise]

Hello Greywolfs, nice picture 8) Ive herd the same thing about gold beingfound were the fools gold is. The image yoou posted looks like the type of rock that would contain some gold also. This fools gold can also make a nice specimen.

Fool's Gold IS iron pyrite.
Your photo is not of fool's gold. Fool's Gold is Iron Pyrite and is always crystal pyramid cubed shapes all jammed together. I put a picture on here for you to see. And NO, there is not going to be gold where you find iron pyrite as a rule. Oh sure you might find gold in the same area sometimes, but as a rule, iron pyrite (fool's gold) is not an indicator of gold. Some people will say black sand (iron oxides) are where gold is are also under the same delusion. Yes you will find black sand with gold, but finding black sand does not mean you will or have found gold.
We had a guy at one of our outings come up to me beaming with pride. He said, "Wait til you see what I got here!" He showed me a can filled to the top with black sand. I asked him why he was so excited. He said he heard that if you have black sand you have gold. We ran his black sand through a gold wheel, which is a long spiral that moves continuously with water moving the heavy particles up to the end of the spiral and allowing anything else to fall off the wheel. That heavy stuff will be the gold. After working his whole bucket through the wheel he had maybe gotten 3-4 microscopic specks of gold, which is par for dirt in the area where we were. He had spent an entire week end filling this can with black sand because he fell for the old tales people were telling. The answer is no, there is not always gold where you find fool's gold or black sand. After all, where do you think the name of iron pyrite came from? It was because of all of the fools who believed the tale and instead of finding out what he should have been doing he settled for the tale and dug up the wrong stuff.

i get quite a bit of gold out of areas that contain large amounts of mica and pyrites and when i process the pyrites i do sometimes get some good silver and gold content.

My gold prospecting Buddy crushed some of the rocks we got that had fools gold on it, and panned it out there was nice pieces of gold in it, the thing was that its in between the rocks, i was suprise to see it.

yep its a pain to do but you can also use a chlorine leach to pull more au out after you burn off the sulphides sometimes those old prospectors use to just walk away from pyrites and leave a boatload of gold and silver just sitting there on the ground so if you see an old tailing pile with a load of pyrites it may be worth it to crush that stuff up and get the gold out.
the gold will sometimes coat part of the pyrite or is injected into openings between the formations the same with plat and silver.

The gold-like flecks in that rock are iron pyrite. When rubbed on a streak plate, it leaves a greyish-black trail. Gold would leave a gold streak on the plate.

pyrite tends to smell like sulpher when heated, treated with some acids or crushed, gold will not break but pyrite will.
dont suck in any fumes if you heat it unless you want to take a chance of your family collecting on your insurance.
