Prospecting in the US is controlled by the  mining Act of 1892, which allows a anyone that is a US citizen to claim mining rights to a piece of State or Federal land that is open to mineral rights. An individual claim can be up to 20 acres. There are separate rules for placer claims and hardrock claims.
Treasure hunting is controlled by individual state and federal laws and varies from state to state. Meteorites belong to the person whose private land it falls on. Artifacts belong to the government and are protected. Sunken treasure follows international law concerning salvage rights. Correct me if I made a mistake Homefire.

Sorry to hear that Xavier. I see why you moved to Brussels. In the US the government is the people, though some may argue the point. When a government is run by just a few people that believe they are greater than the whole, you get people like Idi Amin Dada , Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Bashar al-Assad, Ruhollah Mostafavi Moosavi Khomeini , well you get the picture. I will get down off my high horse now. lol

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

OK, Enough Pi***ng & Mo****ng.  The topic was prospecting clubs, of which I am proud to be a member of one. (Whoops! up on my high horse again Rider) I hope others are fortunate enough to be able to join one also. It is so much fun to be with others who are of the same mindset as yourself and who are glad to help and share. Just like this forum  Kiss Can hardly wait for the creeks to start running, then my gold tally should go way up. I hope I find a truckload full so I can share it with my thunting.com buddies. If any one else belongs to a club, lets us hear about your experiences.

Hey guys,

Just bought myself a dry washer and gas operated leaf blower and I am going prospecting very soon on one of my clubs claims. I haven't taken pictures of it yet, as I want to take pictures of it in use not in my driveway. Of course I also I want to take pictures of any gold I recover with it so I can post it here. The real gold quantity comes when you are dredging, because you can move so much more material. Material volume is the key in getting lucky at gold prospecting. The rest is location, location, location.

Carl, I've been snookered more often than not (unless you call a trace of color not being snookered)----of course the few times I've been out to the GPAA sites I was either drywashing or panning.   I keep meaning to try my Lobo SuperTraq, but truth be told I enjoy hunting relics so much that when it's nice I head to a relic patch instead of a gold patch.    I used to attend the GPAA meetings in Phoenix regularly but when both they and ATU moved meeting locations temporarily, I kept up with ATU and stopped going to the GPAP meetings.

Sorry to hear you dropped out of the GPAA, but glad you at least stayed in the ATU. You are welcome to come to our club meetings as my guest. I belong to the Roadrunner Prospector Club and they have meetings on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Italian Club on 12th St. just south of Northern. The following Saturday they have an outing on one of the claims. The next meeting is August 21st and the Outing is August 23rd. Just found out they just opened up 5 new claims near Poland Junction on the Big Bug creek.Thank you for inviting me to your club. Hope to see you there.
