What precludes using larger coils on the MXS.. save weight? About the only real benefit I see to using a larger coil on a VLF detector, in really bad ground, is for coverage. More than a few inches down (where I hunt) and target ID becomes so degraded as to be useless, shifting too far towards iron and becoming increasingly jumpy, that better results (and depth) can be had by switching to my TDI. Even with scewing the the GB setting, in order to change where targets will sound off (lo tone or hi tone), the depth is considerably more with the TDI and ID characteristics remain at full depth, save for changing in amplitude.

The use of larger Coils will add up to 60%+ depending on ground conditions and they offer more coverage along with being very sensitive to extremely Tiny Items unlike Coils of old, Machines like the TDI's should only be used as a last resort because they bring very little to the table and they lack the sensitivity to small Gold that a Normal VLF will find with ease, And the other downside to the TDI is that it has no Discrimination, Which means you dig the lot, and in normal ground conditions with equal sized Coils a good VLF will match the TDI inch for inch, The TDI's are a good machine but in anything but clean ground they will drive you nuts.

One thing that people need to think about when buying any VLF is how many Coils are made for them and Are they restricted to using just one Type of Coil, Because depending on the Coil choice the difference can be measured in feet not inches.

Yeah I love the TDI's but when ever possible I always try to use the MXT A/P because it can see bits up to 40X smaller when used with the factory Coils, And it can Disc out the junk,

Plus you can fine tune the MXT because there are so many Coils made for it, They are Both first class machines, The TDI Pro has about the best balance of any machine I have used. Even with that 12" Coil it just Glides across the Ground.

Hello
Good to know that the Whites DFX detector take the same coils as the MXT.  Smiley

There are about 30 to 40 Coils out there that will fit them, Whites coils are the most sensitive but if mineralization is a problem then a person should be looking at the Detech SEF 6x8 and the 10x12 and they can run the Gain higher.

The factory make a 6x4 DD and a 14x8 DD and a 6" round Concentric and if you can find any of the Older Whites Coils there is a 6x10 Concentric and a 14x 8 Concentric. you can pick the concentrics up cheap enough

Has anyone tried moving the mineralized / Iron rock say about 2 ft. off the ground (to get away from the back ground) to detech just that type of out crop rock by itself with different sized coils with or without dis.?
Is there that much different gain between Whites coils and say Detech SEF coils?
Thank you. Wink

Whites Coils are extremely sensitive Even the 15" Concentric can see bits weighing 0.02 grams, where Detech are not quite as hot so they seem to handle the mineralization a bit better According to some.

Has anyone tried to wire up a very old 4" whites probe to a newer Whites GMT? coil?
The Frequencies are about 48.5 KHZ. on both detectors.

The 4" whites coil probe this one has is quite sensitive.
