It was back around May/June that this 98oz nugget sold for some crazy amount under the name "The Washington Nugget", and was reported to be found on a private property in Nevada County, California. It was soon after discovered as a scam to attract investors in a bogus mine, as the nugget was actually found in Australia back in the late 80's.
Below is a couple of forums that have been covering the scam, with the latest being the auctioneer Fred Holabird was to have the nugget tested in Australia by a professor of geology at the university of Western Australia. The same auctioneer that was also assisting the property owner to sell his otherwise worthless land.
There are some horrible rumours down-under about whether this is actually happening, or whether it is just an extension of the scam. I know I am one that suspects the lander owner was not the only one involved in this scam. I mean how does a guy who has the seat out of his pants get hold of a rare collectors piece such as the Orange Roughie Nugget?
Just wondering if anyone has heard anything in relation to the finder, the auctioneer or the nugget itself?
