The French were known to be in the area as early as the late 1500's or earlier and possibly even the Spanish before them, followed by the British who kicked the French out and later by the Americans who kicked the British out in the late 1700's. Varoius native tribes were known throughout the area during war and peace amongst the tribes and against the invaders, Chippewas, Hurons, Shawnee, Senneca, Mohawk, were a few I remember for sure roamed the area, Chippewas being a dominant tribe in the area. The Iroquois Nation was present in the area with the seven tribes of the nation. Mackinac Island was a well known trading post for the Natives as well as Sault Saint Marie.
