Below is pictured one of my better relic finds. It was under rocks in a stone breast works at a cavalry camp in an arid area of the West. I wonder if if was put there to keep the hot sun off to preserve a bit of coolness to the muddy water it probably contained? The cork stopper was intact. I found the chain that attaches the stopper to the canteen several yards away. Perhaps it was from that canteen or maybe even from another trooper's canteen. The dry air and placement under rocks left the artifact in only a slightly rusted condition. It could be used today. The cork is even in a good condition.
My hunting partner also found a canteen so perhaps it was common practice to place canteens under rocks. I bet a couple troopers were thirsty on the next ride.
By researching the unit that lost the canteens I am able to determine the exact day the relic was forgotten.
