I found this Roman sling projectile on the outskirts of an important seige area. I can't remember the exact date of the seige, but I believe it was something like 34 BC or mabye 64 BC. Anyway, the piece is old.
I first wondered why the detector acted up on a rock. But, the rock was heavy and we quickly determined it was something made of lead with a thick coating of patina.
I read that the Romans were experts in flinging these things. I suppose the velocity was well over a hundred miles an hour and the lead would do at least as much damage as a musket ball on impact.
