Garrett GTI 2500
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:50:14 am »
Go Up Go Down

Yes, having moved last July to a place with very little potential, I waited for this spring to go back to my old spot with this time, a "big ally", Garrett's TreasureHound Eagleeye searchcoil to put on my GTI 2500. This year, no more musket ball digging, only artillery shells (all empties as it is on a former practice field, on a shore a few miles from Quebec city). Maybe I'll get lucky and find another cannon ball. Last year, at this very time, I already had dug my first one, a 24 pounder and 4 or 5 1863 Armstrong muzzle loading rifled cannon shells. Later I found almost a dozen percussion fuses plus 3 or 4 that were both percussion and time delay (18 seconds with tenth of a second increments). 2 of them were still on the upper part of a shell and one was on a 4 ?" diam. at the base, ogive. Also found what looks like half of the base of that shell which measured some 6 ?" diam. This does not count the many fragments of exploded cannon balls of different curvature/size.

Now, after a 3 hours drive this week-end, and a lot of practice while the tide will be rising, I hope I'll have a few pictures to show you all. In the mean time, I'll just cross my fingers and wait.

it's a clever system by the look of it

Under optimal conditions, Garrett claims that it can detect as deep as 27 feet. Though, I won't need it to detect that deep. The rock under the mud/clay is at its deepest part about a foot and a half. That's more the capacity to detect ONLY targets as big and bigger than a soda can that had me going for that "add-on".

I give myself a year before I buy a good water/land detector as my all around detector and keep the GTI 2500 for those special occasions where I am SURE that I will need it.

This week-end I'll have my 8 years old son Anthonin following me with his ACE 150 to try his hands at detecting where I'll have found a good target for him with my own detector. Father and son fun THAT is quality time as I love it!

BTW, anyone knows if there is any way to identify cannon ball "shells" either by the thickness or the curvature etc?

Some of last year's finds with my youngest son Benjamin:

Well it looks like you've been digging some real big holes, and it's cheeper than going to the Gym

And you have some good finds there too.

Oddly enough, I didn't dig much deeper than 12 - 15 inches deep. Most often than not, my findings were at 6 to 8 inches, including the cannon ball at 8 inches. It's that darn birdshot (hunters there) that got me digging some one foot for nothing a few times. It really pissed me off  Angry so this year, NO MORE digging for nothing! Detecting
