The third picture is just the back side of the button. Sorry for the confusion.

The horse shoe looks like a mule shoe to me it is more round then most horses I find. The button don't look that old to me but is very interesting  let me know what you find out about it.

Thanks Seldom. I keep looking at that horse shoe and it seems round and big for a horse. Don't know. I have e-mailed a person about the button, will see.

Hey Cyber, better watch out you'll start picking up iron like me. That shoe looks like mine a little, some of mine are three inches in the middle.

Ha Ha. You got me into iron relics  Wink. I love to find the odd stuff in the oddest places.

Hi Cyb,
The horse/mule shoe is a little hard to ID but I have definite shoes from the 1812 war I will post a pic tomorrow as you will see they haven't changed much in design for many years so yours looks just like the ones I have from that period, ID gets easier the older they are I have one example from the UK that is medieval 500 years old and the difference is very pronounced from near history.

Thanks John. I heard from a nice old lady (89) that people used to ride horses in open spaces in parks and woods in Chicagoland. I may assume early 1900s like most my rairoad iron relics, although I did find a monster butcher's cleaver ax from the mid-1800s. I was hoping that how deep you find iron relics may give a clue of how old it could be. But on the other hand, iron stuff is heavy and may sink deep quickly.  Wink

Guys, now that I'm cleaning the horse shoe with electrolysis, one of its nails was revealed. I took a closeup picture to see if you can figure out a date on the nail and hence the horse shoe. Also, I noted that a chunk of the horse shoe looks smashed on one side. Could it tell us of an accident or that it was smashed by a rock?

I'm with Johnnn,   horseshoes are REALLY hard to date for a whole lot of reasons:  1) styles don't change much  2) multiple styles exist during the same time period for different purposes and different hoof conditions 3) until fairly recently most horseshoes were hand-forged and very rarely "stamped" with identifying marks.   And when it gets to the differences between horse shoes and mule shoes, it's a bit of a fallacy to say that mule shoes are rounder than horse shoes

Mule shoes are more round.

Bovine shoes are in two parts most times.

These are labled as horse shoes but have not been turned.

There more like a Mule Shoe.

Mule shoes are more round.

While the hooves tend to be more round, the shoes are not necessarilly more round because of the difference in the way the hooves tend to be trimmed.  Homie, if you look at the links I provided, especially the first one which is a farrier's (shoer's) catalog, you'll notice that except for the draft horses the mule shoes are narrower than the typical horse shoe.   (and the shoes I've seen for "Arabs" in shoeing catalogs are about as round as they come).  Given the choice between popular believe and catalogs used by the professional who do the shoeing, I'll go with the professionals.

Yeah, and my wife's favorite mule was the one she put a hole if while shooting up at her grandpa's house.   (of course, it WAS a different kind of mule and the hole was in the gas tank  Smiley )
