Garrett GTI 2500

Go Up Go Down

This sunday I went with my son Anthonin at our old spot which is now a 3 hours drive from home (we moved, not the spot!   Grin ). Anthonin turned 8 years old Monday so I wanted him to have a good quality moment with his dad metal detecting for late 1800s Artillery shells/fragments. Last summer we found on that same spot, a few EMPTY British 1863 Armstrong (9 pounders) rifled cannon shells and quite a few of those bigger fragments I can't identify (probably late 1800s) so we hoped for a nice surprise this time too.

Poor kid, everything went wrong. The walk in the mud was almost a mile long so he was tired before we even began detecting. He dropped his ACE 150 in a little stream we were crossing (good thing, it was not affected by the water as I picked it up real quick). Later, he fell in the mud almost face first. That was it! We went back to the car, he changed and the hunt was over. Time began co rise anyway.

All I found with my Garrett "detect-O-matic" whatyamakallit (TreasureHound with EagleEye pinpoint) were those 3 heavy artillery shell fragments. But they are huge compared to the 1863 Armstrong ones we found last summer.

One fragment was ribbed (I found a few more last year but did not keep them) and has some lettering on the ogive E followed by O and C interlaced.

1-3/8 inches thick half artillery shell base

Same shell base must have been a good 6 inches outer diam.

Part of a shell cone

Details of the ribbed shell fragment with the lettering on it.
It looks like a lead outer skin on the body.

Some of those bigger fragments that I found last summer

Looks like some type of Artillery shell for sure.   Riffling on the edge. Wink
