Wow!  I live in California and don't think we have much of those "treasures" here.  Nice collection!  I'm into history and what comes along with it.

What type of site were these found? I have a project concerning cannonballs in our local area and would appreciate any knowledge you could share.

Hi Jez,
All the cannonballs you see in the pic's are from areas that were contested during the war of 1812 between the US and Britain, fought in Canada.
Most are found as single finds but I have found groups of them at various places, they would be the result of minor skirmishing between the opposing armies.
The main battle areas either off limits or under housing sub divisions.

The cannonballs I am interested in were French and were dumped into a river in 1763 at the end of the French Indian war. The fort was to be surrendered to the British but any non-movable artillery was denied the Brits prior to evacuation.

So, currently I am wondering about the composition of these cannon and balls. I am considering a raft mounted array of PI detectors (coils submerged) with electronics onboard. The state archeologist is a local who I will consult when it gets past the dreaming stage.

Hi Jez,
Dumping ammo back then and now into rivers and lakes seems to have happened quite frequently, if you have an idea where these events took place one thing you could try is,if you can place on board your craft a "plumbers" pipe cam these extend out to 50 feet attach to a telescopic pole this will only give you about 18 feet and of course you will need an electrical generator to run it.
If you are in clear water its a lot of fun as you scope the bottom, and the images are very good...HH,,,,,,,Johnnn...........Rent from Home Depot..

Thanks, that's a good idea.  What sort of metal composition do your cannonballs have? Lead or iron (or other)?  Do they give a strong signal and are you using PI or VLF?

Hi Jez.
These are all "pig" iron or cast iron, I have heard of lead cannonballs but nowhere do you hear of them actually being used, even way back lead would have been more costly than cast iron ....my machine is a Tesoro Vaquero.....excellent machine
and cannonballs for me at least always give off a positive signal until they are on the surface "then" they read negative "strange".....HH.......Johnnn

Wow, you are a fountain of info. Now I wonder if underwater and buried in sand/silt needs to be considered as more involved.

Regardless, you have been very kind and helpful,

Ken Roberts

Hi Ken,If you know that your area of research has a strong enough rumor regarding these projectiles and the water is not too deep and you have the electronic "savvy" you wont have any problem finding them, you best wish is they are not covered up with too much silt.
Some research I have just completed is leading me to another possible site for the Fall that I am sure will contain some cannonballs. Have to wait and see if I;m right........HH........Johnnn
