interested in CW artillery.  A buddy and I found these in a fairly tight area in Loudoun County, Va a few years back.  He smoked me.

I am not an expert on CW shells.  They look like one that was posted in Today's finds on December 27, 2006 by Dean.  The caption is:  20 Lbs CW Parrott Shell

Appreciate everyone's comments and concerns.  These shells are Union Parrot shells, all but one are 10#ers.  They were all paper fused and have all been safely deactivated.   No exploding fireplaces or homesteads.  Now to find some more

Welcome from New Mexico!    Ka BOOOOOOOOOOM! LOL.   Just a side note.  There was a guy not long ago, back east some place cleaning a Canon Ball in his garage.   One lit off and Killed him.  They found like 100 more in his house.   The damn thing was 100 years old.

Yes - that was a truly unfortunate incident.  Fellow's name was Sam White.  He was cleaning a large naval cannonball with a watercap fuse - basically a waterproof fuse....meaning the powder chamber stood a good chance of remaining intact.  Apparently there was a hairline crack all the way through the shell and a spark went through the crack into the power chamber - results were not good.

Shells shown here all had paper fuses - basically one of three things probably happened.  The fuses were cut too long allowing them to hit the ground prior to detonation and being put out by the impact, it was raining when they were fired putting them out or the shells were fired and never lit, either accidentally or purposefully.  Typically paper fused shells are relatively safe but, just like a gun always assume they're loaded.
