Little is known about tha 3lb cannon being used in tha
Civil War. Could I have been destined to find this?

{alt}

Over 50 years ago, I was a teen involved in a historical
organization called the Sons of  Confederate Veterans.
It was the Centennial of the Civil war. We were involved
in firing an original Civil War 3bl cannon many times... It
was a cannon from the Revolutionary War period.

We used cut off orange juice cans which were made of
metal back then. We filled them with different stuff in them
that would not scratch tha barrel.

I asked the owner of the cannon why we used the orange
juice cans. He told me that they were almost exactly like
the shot canister cups used by the Confederates. But the
ones made by the Confederates were usually copper. He
showed me a cup, which along with the cannon belonged
to his grandfather. His great grandfather acquired the cannon
when he inherited property that had been a Confederate
training camp before the Civil War. That was where He lived.

About a year ago, I was searching at the bottom of a hill,
and on private property. The hill was across from a shallow
river crossing on the Arkansas River. I think artillery had
been installed on the hill, because I have found some
evidence, including this shot canister cup.

This is truly rare. Just try to Goggle it.

If you find anything, please let me know.

I put the musket balls in for the photo. It will hold about 70
or 80.

Hope you got something out of that,

Tabdog

Hello Tabdog . Whatever it is , is very rare . Are you sure it was shot from a cannon or is it a home made bullet or projectile of some kind ? You started a Great Mystery here !!
Thanks for posting . You are probably correct but look how small it is !!

I found a couple of mini balls and my oldest patent date, 1856.
It was a patent on a component of a steam powered water pump.
I found a Spenser cassing and an old 45 cal, probably a Colt. Also,
some stuff I can not remember right now.

It is in a bussy part of the capitol city of Arkansas and finds are
mostly covered or distroyed by development. I also can see where
they dug out to install the artillary on the side of the hill.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Hay Eugene,

You said;

"Are you sure it was shot from a cannon"

I am sure they never shot this one. It was lost or left
behind. But stuff seemed to end up at the bottom of
this very steep hill.

And you said;

"or is it a home made bullet or projectile of some kind ?"

The cannon was a relic at the time of the Civil War. But
arms were in short supply. They made their own shot cups
locally. There is no telling what they put in them.

Also you said;

"You are probably correct but look how small it is !!"

Yes, it is small. It is just the right size to fit a 3lb cannon.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

No I did not as a matter of fact.

I helped get my sons ready to go rock climbing.
Then I met a metal detectorist at a park. But,
we did not detect. He was flying radio controled
aircraft. It was the first time we met. We plan
to hunt later in the year when the conditions are
better.

Then I got the oil changed in my car, went grocery
shoppin and piddled around.

But I do hunt at least some most days.

HH,

Tabdog

Wow, what a exquisite Civil War relic.  Sounds like you have some pretty rich hot spots for such hunting.  You seem to get the best relics around, congrats. Wink Smiley

White's QXT Pro- Sun Ray XL-1 Probe - BH Pinpointer (modified)

Go Up Go Down

I once made a homemade mortar out of an old tank shell casing...I cut it off where the neck began to narrow, and a 1LB coffee can could easily slide down the tube but still be snug enough to fly straight...I punched out the center of the bottom of the shell and epoxied a cut off nial for a firing pin...Then I punched a hole big enough to epoxy a shotgun shell primer in the bottom of the 1LB coffee cans...filled em 1/4 with black powder, then a cardboard disc, then fill to 3" from the top with sand, then the rest with quick drying cement.  Let the projectiles (coffee cans) sit over night, then burry the tube so just the top sticks outta the ground, then drop a can down the tube and run for cover FAST...The first one I filled 1/2 with powder, and it blew the whole kit and kaboodle sky high...I barely made it behind a wall before it blew...Kiddies do NOT try this at home...Once I lowered the Black Powder charge, it would fly about 200 yards, and leave about a 1 foot deep by 8 inch diameter hole in the ground.
I will not be responsible for your lost appendiges, head, family jewels, etc. if you try to copy this... Round About  Violent

Kind of strange. I can find videos of folks shooting 3 pound cannons.
I can see where lots of them were used through out history. But there
is little info on the cannon itself or the ordenance used with it.

When I found this, I looked in vane for an example on the net.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
