central piece looks like some sort of journal, as if you a re looking at the bottom or a side of a crankshaft, possibly of a 2 cylinder steam engine.

Hmmm; perhaps. The more I look at it, the more I get the feeling that it is familiar. I keep thinking................large valve + gland packing, and follower. But in truth just don't know.

Next time I am on location, I will try and take some better photographs and run a tape measure over it.
