It sure do! At first I thought that they were lead but perhaps a little heat will resolve the question.

I have now found plenty of them still stuck in the tip of shattered jackets.

Just do a specific gravity check. If they are lighter than lead, should prove it out. Regardless, I think you are on the right track. HH

Small pieces of WWII fighter aircraft that crashed there, an old shipwreck, a gold ring, some old silver jewellery, and thousands of .303, .30, 50cal, and 20mm projectiles. The area was used as a air to ground target range by the RAF and USAF during WWII. Oh and a fair number of decimal and pre-decimal coins.

Most detectorists avoid this beach like the plague, due to the high concentrations of WWII scrap hiding in the sands, but if one is patient and determined better things do turn up. I recently invested in a Nel Snake Coil for my MineLab Safari and it's helping to get in between the scrap, but large copper jacket fragments from 50cal projectiles keep fooling the machine into thinking that they are coins.

Wow great finds congratulations.

Item "E" at the bottom lefthand side of the picture is the back half of a silver cigarette case. It has no hall marks or identification marking on it, but I am told that some American silver didn't allways have hall marks. As of yet, I don't know if it is a loss suffered by some holiday maker, or if it perhaps belonged  to one of the pilots that were killed when crash landing in the area. Now, if I could find the front of the case perhaps there would be some identification markings on it.

I know of one Mustang and one spitfire that crashed into the anti-invasion poles that used to cover the beach during WWII. Both aircraft disintergrated on impact with the wooden posts.

My earlist predecimal coin from the beach is a George III halfpenny. Perhaps I shouldn't mention George here!

Wow sounds like lots of awesome history there. Definitely try find the other half of the case. That would be cool.

Go Up Go Down

As you suggest; the area is steeped in history. The Romans, the Vikings, and thousands of visitors, all passed nearby. There are over a hundred shipwrecks in the estuary and the bay. The most famous wrecks are those of the Trevor and the Nonpareil. Both were packet boats plying their trade between Dublin and Parkgate and both boats were lost in a hurricane on the same night. Drven before the storm, they floundered on the West Hoyl Bank, with the loss of two hundred souls.

Small copper maritime nails often turn up on the high tide line and there are even the remains of an unknown wreck close by.

Many thanks for reading and for your friendly comments.

As the tides rise and fall, they cover and uncover the wreck periodically and one can see more of what lies hidden beneath the shifting sands. Sometimes it's just wooden stumps sticking out of the sand and then at other times one can see some metal structure. Any ideas what this great lump of iron may be?

It's approximately six foot long and I guess it would probably weigh at least half a ton; or more. Only guestimates though.
Relatively modern, I guess.
