Go Up Go Down

Hi there.
I'm hoping that one of the gun junkies on this site could give me an indication as to the type and age of this find. It is solid brass and comes from a farm that's been around since 1689. This was found in an old Turkish oak forest. It was quite deep maybe 30-40cm.
And yes I thoroughly checked the hole and dug some more but it was just this piece. The pics are not great but maybe the shape will give it away.

Hi Xavier.
Here are some better ones I think. I was actually quite excited when I found this piece!
Thanks

Hi Xavier
Thanks that would be great .It comes from a farm in the Cape Town area. There was the Battle of Blaauberg nearby and I think that the British may have been in the area during the Boer war as well. I have also been approached to go and look for a family heirloom of 300 gold coins on a farm in the country. Now this is going to be interesting!
Kind regards
Oscar

Well Cape Town is the mother city and there were Brits before during and after the Boer war so I think that we could be on the right track.

Regards Xavier
Try polishing the under part of the guard as there should be some markings over there do this with a brass wire brush

Without being able to handle it, I would tentatively identify it as the trigger guard for an 1853 Enfield rifled musket. The 1853 Enfield was a three-band, single-shot, muzzle-loading rifle musket. It fired a .577 caliber mine' ball which was accurate at several hundred meters and caused devastating wounds. It was the standard weapon for the British army between 1853-1867. It along with the 1861 Springfield rifle from the U.S., were the two most used muzzle loaders of the day. Many were later converted to the .577 Snider Enfield which accepted the .577 Snider cartridge.

Hi Ghostcat
Thanks a stack! Well I guess that makes it a good find. We don't really get much in the 1800's as far as relics go. To date I have not found even a single coin from the 1800's. And the farms in the area date from the late 1600's! Could this be because there was less money at the time or where people just a lot more careful with their cash?
Kind regards
Oscar

Hi Viking

Well I have been looking at lots of British weapons but non of them fit your trigger guard so I guess that we should also consider Portuguese weapons .
