Go Up Go Down

while in the marines, i was sent to Okinawa, Japan for a couple of months to train while on my way back to Iraq for my second tour.  i spent a lot of time snorkeling and freediving in the crystal clear water.  i was probably a hundred meters off shore, when i looked down and spotted what looked like a horseshoe.  i held my breath and dove as deep as i could go, feeling like both my head and lungs were going to explode from the pressure.  i must have tried five times, and then finally i got it.  this horseshoe that you can see in the picture is fashioned after the really old ones.  it was covered in barnacles and years of ocean life that had been growing on it, however no it is all fallen off, that's what the shards of stuff laying around the outside of the horseshoe are from, that's the actual ocean life that grew onto it.  this thing is totally flat, no ends on it to fit the horse.  anyone know horseshoe history?
