Thanks Luc,

I am really getting into this mystery now since reading Ben Hammott's book.

This story is really strange, it started with the act of the Abbe Sauniere, but he has served as facilitator of a witness. Long before him many facts have been committed to protect or hide a secret, but which one? And even now some groups or secret societies working behind the scenes to cover their tracks and investigations.
Best regards

You truly never know! I would not waste time worrying about secret societies, but would keep an eye open, it might be like Sandialotis.

A version is also possible that: The Abbe Henri Boudet, cure of the neighboring Rennes-les-Bains. Erudite and very charitable, has, despite living modestly, with a large fortune and pay to the bishopric of sums which earned him the account of his bishop, Mgr Billard. He's offering in 1887 to Sauni?re to finance the restoration of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene provided to keep the supervisor absolute but hidden. He who pays the name of Mary Denarnaud in fifteen years (not including the accounts of the years 1891 to 1894 were missing) 4 516 691 gold francs! In 1903 it ceased payments for reasons unknown. Sauni?re is then no money and a quarrel between two priests who moved last twelve years. Boudet, before dying Sauni?re revealed to the secret of his wealth and location of the treasure. Since the wild schemes of Sauniere resumed. The death was interrupting them.
