At home jewelry cleaning methods:
I've found that commercial silver polish works great on silver items, but not on gold.  Instead, gold, diamonds & most other precious stones can be soaked for ? hour in a solution of 1 part sudsy ammonia to 5 parts water, then brushed off with a soft-bristle toothbrush or cloth to remove any remaining residue.  Turquoise, opals & pearls are more delicate than they appear, and are best cleaned with just warm water, because ammonia is too drying and can cause them to crack.  Costume jewelry can be shined up by a ? hour soak in warm water mixed with either baking soda or salt.  I've heard some people suggest using toothpaste, but that's real abrasive and will easily scratch up gold and 925 silver, so I don't recommend it! Great

Just thinking I should clean some silver jewelry - no idea why but it's all starting to tarnish. Things I've had for years. I'm going to take your advice and buy some polish. Thanks for the timely post.  Sue

I always love do-it-yourself tips, and would love to hear if anyone has others that they find work great for them!
