ya know ,the arkie barkie is a good idea when their is no snow, but for us in spokane washington, tons of the stuff. last winter we had 5 feet of snow in 36 hours, and stayed for months, with more on top of it.  we even get temps to -20 below.  I think i would be better to fill my garage with about 12" of dirt and have some one bury coins and junk for me for intertainment.  Although the coast areas can produce some mighty fine beach hunting, but it is a 350 mile treck for me.  Darn winter anyway, think i will go back to florida.

Winter is the time to do research for the summer hunts. You may not think that such a thing is helpful yet more finds of higher value turn up in my finds pouch when I have done just a bit of research. An old park may be hunted to death but in an old newspaper might show the site of an old bandstand where music concerts were performed in the 1800s. Don't laugh. That exact scenario has happened to me and the site is now covered in native bushes that yield just enough to allow the slow search by a metal detector. It turned up hundreds of old coins.

There's a riverfront area that was used for swimming back in the 1800s through to the mid 1900s which is reclaimed by native plants again when a nearby marina was built. An old Cricket field with a concrete sitting area is buried in undergrowth at the same site. I can't tell you how many items I have found there which other treasure hunters don't even know about because they haven't done a lick of research. I'm not about to tell them about it either. At low tide, the finds are incredible. Shhhhh! My secret.

Use the winter months to your advantage. Do some research. Even parks that are off limits due to new laws can be a source of new sites by considering that the homes around the parks are probably just as old as the park.

Good luck.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Fine tips and good examples, GD. Thanks for sharing those. Research is a necessity for the hard-nosed, die-hard t-hunter! Clapp

You are so right, here is a good example, I have a large picture history book of my town from 1872 to 1972. In it is very valuable pictures and locations of property and the likes, ie events, lodges, forts,. Well one of the old homesteads i am now hunting on the river was found useing this book and a lot of leg work. Quite old dateing to the early 1870,  The author of this book actually lived on this site till the 1930;s.
The buildings are gone but remnants are still there hidden in tall grass and brush. This was at one time a very big fram and ranch. Have found dimes to 1919 so far,  The hunting is slow as it is fairly brushy, hard to get a good swing going. This book has also provided clues to other sites I will find to include old swimming sites.  It is so exciteing to find a part of history when there is no above ground structors to go on, just remnants hidden in the brush. I am trying to locate the garbage dump, and what a find that will be, hope to even find an out house site.  Would also say that garage sales and flea markets are a good source of information resources, as you are apt. to find old picture books of your area, to include news papers, magazines etc.

Tabdog, that's some nice Arke gold.

Just curious... do you cash these in or add them to your collection?  Where would be a good place to cash them in and how do you know you aren't getting ripped off?

Hay Paul,

Here is a link that explains what I do with the scrap.

There are some peices that I do not scrap, but I scrap
most of it.
