Here are a couple of gold rings I found a few years ago...

One is a posy ring inscribed 'Fear God & Love Me', the other is a mystery - it would be too uncomfortable to wear, so was probably used to decorate something....any ideas what?

I agree Dinso, that second one is really rough cut.  Maybe it was a link in part of a chain or surrounding an inner piece which is now missing...  What is the size of the second ring?  They're great finds, even if it's a bit of a mystery! Cool

Hi BackAtcha, Thanks for your message.
The second ring is too small to go over my finger as in the pic attached, but I think before it was mashed by the plough it was quite a nice shape. It looks as though it has been shaped from sheet gold, as it is only around 0.5mm thick...

I don't think 2nd item is meant for wearing on finger as-is. I believe a part of the inner section is missing-and maybe that part made it comfortable for fitting around finger. Maybe it's not a gold ring at all but something else made of gold.Huh?Huh??

It looks like a gold jewelry finding to me. Jewelers would use it to cap a gemstone into place before using a flame to melt the ring over a gemstone making it part of the ring itself.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Dear All,

Thanks for the ideas regarding the original use of this item, it makes the thing more enjoyable to be able to understand why it was made as it was.

Good hunting!
