Hi Bill

Wow an E-Trac for your first detector. Way to go. Sit down and read the hole manual first and then read it again.
There is a bit of a learning curve with this detector. There is a book written by Andy Sabbich that give a lot of details about the E-Trac and Explorer metal detectors. Go to youtub and look for E-Trac videos. Also go to MLO.com .
Stick with the factory patterns first, its ok for coins. I run mine in quick mask with just a few bars of Iron masked out.
I let my ears determin weather I dig a target or not, and only use the FE/CO numbers to confirm what my ears are telling me.
I was one of the first people to get the E-Trac when they came out and I have had mine with me in my truck nearly every day. I no longer sell Minelab detectors, but I still think this is one of the best metal detectors out on the market.
If you have any questions let me know.
Good Luck
Todd

Thank you for all the information and if we ever meet don't tell my wife how much I spent for this detector.
Hi Todd,

I was hoping you could give me some advice ? my E-Trac came with very large Koss UR-30 headphones. I already have a nice set of over the ear Sony headphones for my iPhone. I would need to buy a small plug to large plug adapter to plug them into the detector, will this work or are they not compatible. Do you use headphones when you go searching?

Thank you for all your help!

Yes on the headphones. The Koss are good phones, but I like to use small light one too. Just go to radio shack and get a 1/4 to 1/8 stereo adapter. I also use a set of wirless radio shack headphones.
I would sugest just keep the detector in auto ground balance and factory coin patters untill you get use to the tone of the machine. Once your ears get use to what a good targedt sounds like then start messen with it. You can adjust tone, adio, pitch and a few other things to realy make those targets stand out, especialy silver. Send me a pm to todd@llanogold.com
and I will give you my phone number and talk you through some of the settings. I wont be home tomarrow because we are having a big gold prospecting get together in Llano Texas, but after that just give me a call.
Thanks
Todd
