I'm no expert in oriental coins, but it looks Chinese to me.  I found a Japanese coin at an old mining town site here in the Blue Mountains, about 40 years ago, and the writing looks different to me.    Detecting

Okay here is a better picture of the Japanese coin I found, along with some other items I found at the same town site.  This style of coin was removed from circulation in Japan in 1870.
