Hello Earl,

this is sort of an antique safety needle / pin as you would use it on clothes. What you see in the picture is sort of the wing with the needles missing. A Roman soldier would use it to fasten his dress / robe. This one has the shapes of bones but there are many different types. Some will display animals, other are heavily decorated with precious metals etc.

Well, I have to admitt: They are unlikely to be found in the USA  Mad However they can be found in many European countries a nother Africa and the Roman empire was rather wide spread during that time.

Here in France you can also find these. However as with Christian's the needle is unfortunately often missing. Maybe this is also why it got lost and now can be found.
