Yes, it was worn as a necklace. I think about 1 out of 25 Roman coins I find has a hole in them - whoch kills the value. But still it is an old historical piece.

Regards

Cool find but terribly corroded looking Great Holes in coins almost always mean it was worn on a string, leather strip, or chain around someone's neck. That is, unless someone shot a hole in it--but Roman soldiers didn't have guns, so I'd guess it was worn around someone's neck on a string, strip of leather, or small diametered chain.

I'm not sure if the robes they wore had pockets so they may have kept the coins on a string/necklace etc...? Huh?

They had purses/bags, that hung on a belt or shoulder strap, remember the Scots sporran.

I noticed the hole is very neatly bevelled, as with a nice, slightly larger, drill bit. What is the white stuff? Lead acitate?

If you can  scratch a tiny bit off and put it in a small bit of mild lye water, if it turns kind of purplish, it is likely a lead compound. Lye water: a quart of water with a teaspoon of lye dissolved in it.... keep off of bare skin.

i have a coin that is identical to yours.  I found it years ago with my first white's coinmaster at just over 12 inches.  My local coin dealer identified it as "NERVA" A.D. 96-98.  On the flip side is a bust of a man with some sort of crown on.  Im working on getting some pictures downloaded of it and several others i found the same day.

Little larger than a US quarter.  Has an image in the other side, but it's covered with something white
Hi, it looks dupondius in size, 1st century ish AD, Roman coins with holes in are frequently found on early UK anglo saxon sites, the opinion is they were re-used as jewellery in these times

Hi, sometimes romans used to check the coins drilling a hole to probe the core of the coin.....
